How to Get the Most out of Quarterly Career Planning

Quarterly planning is key if you don’t want to let yet another year go by without accomplishing your BIG goals! Quarterly planning allows you to review your progress at a regular cadence and adjust your actions as needed. If what you’ve been doing hasn’t been working OR if you’ve been attaining your goals by way of “luck,” try out this quarterly planning process!

Review your goals for the year.

If you haven’t set goals yet, there’s no better time than now. Check out the How to Set Good Career Goals blog. Based on those goals, think through the things you need to do in order to be successful. There are likely things you want to keep doing AND things you need to change to accomplish those goals. Clear vision is key!

List 3 things you want to continue doing.

These are the things that have worked well for you over the past few months. Example: Perhaps you created a morning routine where you identify your top 3 items for the day. If you’ve found that you walk away from most days feeling accomplished based on this practice, you want to be sure to continue doing it!

List 3 things you want to stop doing.

These are the things that haven’t worked well for you over the past few months. Example: Perhaps you’ve been powering through each workday without taking breaks. If you’ve found that you’re completely drained and useless by 1 pm, you want to stop neglecting breaks.

List 3 things you want to start doing.

These are the things you recognize were missing over the past few months. Example: Perhaps you typically log your time at the end of the month, and it takes forever because you can’t really remember what happened at the beginning of the month. You probably want to start logging your time at the end of each week while everything is fresh in your mind.
